My Management School

Risk versus Returns, Core Competencies, Budgeting, Needs versus wants, Work without expectations …. Ya 1 % of the terms that I am learning in my B school  The Balachandran’s were  blessed with a baby girl on the 24 th April ( Yr not disclosed due to confidentiality ) … To the ones wondering whom am I talking about … Ya its me ….Their lives before the nuptial knot was a simple life without many expectations …. Not much exposures and guidance and hence learnt through struggles in life …. Wanted the best of best for their daughter and yes was taken care like a little princess ….My mom wanted me to do my MBA as she wanted to in her early days and could not make it come true …. Too much of confusion, now what has this to do with the Balachandran’s??? Well this piece is about my first management school …..  The management school did not have a CAT score, no group discussions or Personal Interviews, yet had immense learning carved as a niche ….

Risk versus return

Ya my mom being a career woman made a choice not to go for any of the Business Meets or Team dinners or Get Togethers … Not because she disliked them … But thought to spend the evenings after office making chappathis for her husband or working out Decimal problems with her daughter  Risk – Image in the corporate world “Does not socialize” Return – Priceless time with her family She Felt that the return superseded the risk

Core Competencies    Dad being spic and span in keeping the house clean , used to ensure that the house in never in sixes and sevens …Mom being a good cook , Food delicacies and other house hold chores was her cup of T …..Their core competencies was realized without much technical analysis

Budgeting   Normal diaries at home were used to keep a track of their daily expenditures and budgets for the next month with the intended savings … Of course they did not use any @#&* software to arrive at their investment plan  Needs versus Wants  Vasupradha wanted to become a chartered accountant …. Another 8 more papers to go in the journey …. She is very passionate even now about this dream …. When she could not clear her Final on a margin of 20 marks, the Balachandran’s proposed to her the MBA plan … Vasupradha was totally shunning away from that proposal … Now she is in cloud 9 that she took up tat option to do her MBA @ Great lakes ….. Ya needs versus wants … My needs are getting fulfilled by the two Transformational Leaders at home….

Work without expectations

Philosophy course atGreat Lakes emphasized this concept and the Balachandran’s showered their love on their daughter without any expectations……

Ya … My first management school is my Mom and Dad ….I feel all what I learn was taught in a subtle way by them in all their interactions …. My parents just did not realize one thing that all those concepts what is taught in Management Schools were part of them, though they did not have that tag MBA attached to them … Thanks to my B school, tat it has broadened my horizons and has enabled me to link my accademical front and my home front J Am sure most of the readers wld agree with me, tat we got to learn a lot from our close ones … Ya this piece is dedicated to all our parents and our close ones who enrich our learning process in subtle ways….

Choice @ Great Lakes

Do U need to b a Finance wizard to understand the specialty of NPV vs IRR or an Operations Specialist working   those intricate problems having matrix looking like a maze  , or a statistical expert to come up with the right correlation equation …. May b U wld do it here not merely because U have great profs here and U work for It …. But there wld be people who would be ever willing to help you out even without you uttering a word Some instances to quote …..

Neha – My close buddy here … The night before Optimization Techniques would sit with me and force me to hit the books …. Ya work out those simplex problems … Guess named that way to get a feel that it is not complex , though it is … Wld try giving all excuses … Nay would get in to a big fight and sit with me to get rid of my inertia …. Those same problems would scare her , yet she would make a choice to help me out….Madam , being very creative and me being a tech challenged person wld also sit with me late nights not b’coz she had to work , but b’coz I wanted to learn Flash ….She makes her choice

Naren – A perfect example of a guy producing all the results without being systematic …. Systems fail in his doctrine and spontaneity over rules ….20 Min before every exam , he would come and re in force some concepts in my mind ….To my surprise about 30 % of the paper would contain all wat he had discussed … He wld do tat without even me calling him ….He could have gone aside and done it all by himself … When I am down in my ebbs , there he comes and sings my fav nos … Not b coz I asked him … Well he makes a choice

Noor and Gaurav – Our Finance wizards … Wld take a lot of sessions to ensure our fellow mates understand the concepts …. Well they too would be having an exam or an assignment to work upon …I am sure the nights before a Finance Exam , we would all make Alexander Grahambell feel proud of his invention … Call them up even in odd hours , there they would patiently explain the concept without any hesitations …..Amidst their personal life and other activities , they always had time for us …..They make their choice.

Shravan – A tensed person I am …. my friend wld always ease my tension and listen to all wat I got to say though he would have a lot to attend to …Mr . chicken guinea was in love with me for about 3 months …happy that we broke up now … Of course I made the choice ….Shravan wld come every day to pick me up and carry my Lappy bag with lot of things stuffed … Did I ask him ???? Nay he made a choice…

Vatsa – Name a book and there he would tell the crux of it …An voracious reader ……Would always insist on how effectively I spend my time and would take all liberty to shout at me  when I while away my time ….All management books that I have read wld have their credit to this friend of mine ….. Did he choose to read another book than convincing me to read a book … No he made a choice .

Akshat – A meticulous person who would read the Economic Times and send the entire batch the important news for the day ….Would start preparing for exams not merely for the sake of exam, but for knowledge and would explain the concepts to all of us ….Would stay late nights in college not for his work, but to teach some friend of him …. He could have gone home … No he made a choice

Srinidhi –We call her chinni ….In Tamil tat means sugar and yes she deserves to be called so …. Very systematic and her notes in class would get circulated to all of us to prepare … Not only when we ask her …. But @ all times she herself would …. She would make a choice …..

Kitti – Named only in Birth Certificate as Krishna Kumar…Always called Kitti… Wld voluntarily call each of us and give us tips to prepare for exams ….. What needs to be concentrated, what needs to be skimmed through and what needs to even be omitted would all be very clear to our Kitti…. Much before we ask him , there Kitti would pop up with his strategy … He would make a choice ….

Ya …. Here folks make their choice to make others lives easier….. Even before U realize that Ur havin a problem,ur problem is solved …. Kudos to all of You :)

Paradox of Life

Some get what they desire

Some get more than what they aspire

Some get less than what they dream

Some never get what they dream

Some lead lives without a direction

Nevertheless land up in a comfortable position

Some make moves with fullest conviction

Ultimately witness only a plethora of confusion

Some take up things in an aversion

And witness success sans trepidation

Some brim with energy for fulfilling their passion

Without an opportunity to see it a completed action

Some get laurels with approaches linked to pessimism

Some get turmoil where they breathe optimism

Some always waft in a state of happiness

Some have only paths echoing sadness

Some in the journey reach the desired destination

Some never proceed beyond certain stations

This being the paradox of life’s philosophy

Variety being its spice in its mythology

Rasogulla Couple

                           images18.jpg                       images21.jpg

There was a thought tat struck me when I had met a couple when I was on a trip to Tripathi .

We had just finished the dharshan and was in a shop where there were a lot of stuffs for interior decorations … The stuffs looked cute and was also very exorbitant…. Realised tat the shop was only meant for Window shopping n there my eyes caught sight of a couple …. I was also accompanied by my cousin who immediately reacted sayin tat the two did not luk all tat very great ….Ya the man was jus the opposite of bein tall , dark n handsome …. He was short , bald n a lil plum too with his big eyes popping out from the glasses … The woman was far away from being called the actual pretty , elegant and cute kind of a  person …. Ya this wld b the reaction when any person actually looks at them …. This thought triggered of my cousin’s mind even more as jus beside them was this Perfect Made for Each Other couple , in looks……My cousin immediately reacted by sayin “ Life is unfair “ …. Why make a person luk too gud in all aspects n make the other one luk much below normal ….. Felt she was pretty rational in makin tat statement n moved forward … The first couple we met made a purchase of a huge article made of glass and were getting their bill paid …Window shopping from our side was getting a lil too borin and we too decided to  step out ….

After giving too much work to the grey cells in this couple comparative analysis , my cousin wanted me to pick up something to eat from a sweet shop nearby …There off I went to tat sweet shop n to my surprise found tat Short plump man with his wife in the shop ….The woman wanted Rasogullas and was waiting for the same like a small child waitin for its icecream …. The husband just then comes close by and says “ No rasogullas here”…. The disappointed woman without even realisin wat was happening dropped a packet from her hand … Cling Cling Cling Cling was the sound tat caught the attention of the folks there in the shop ….
Lot of glass pieces were found on the floor … Oops yes she had dropped tat huge glass article . The husband came close to her picked up patiently all the pieces around n placed them into a bin closeby. The woman did not know how to react and was jus completely passive ..After picking up all the glass pieces , the man comes and held her hands and immediately said lets go to another shop for rasogullas ….There was not a reaction  of “Cant U be a little more careful” or  “Gosh wat is this”…. I was actually a little moved lukin at tat …. It was a simple incident , but gave me an opportunity for introspection…

How many times have I shouted at my close ones, when I know the intention was not meant to be shouted at ….. Ya I do understand tat we many a times in the pretext of being in anger , just loose out words …..Not tat the man in the sweet shop was unhappy . It was just tat he chose not to show out his anger, especially when his wife herself was not in appreciation for her activities …..

Ya honestly felt tat what was exhibited was actual chemistry …..So what if they were not looking all that very great … Yet they had attributes of a very understanding couple …. What else is needed ????…. Kudos to the Rasagolla Couple……..I have put a picture of  cute looking Couple coz they were actually Cute …. Cute from within  :-) )))))))))
